Blending what our eyes see and what data presents
to enhance day-to-day organizational output.
Skill Set
Bullpen Catching
My experience includes currently serving at the Major League level as the Chicago Cubs Bullpen Catcher. In my current role with the Cubs, I communicate daily with relief pitchers about pitch movement data. and provide feedback during bullpens. My daily responsibilities include playing catch with pitchers as well as analyzing data to contribute to the Major League pitching department regarding coaching decisions. Prior as a Development Coach with the Los Angeles Dodgers, I was able to coach during the day and serve as the bullpen catcher during games in order to improve staff efficiency. Prior to my time with LA, I spent parts of three seasons as a Bullpen Catcher at the Double-A level for the San Diego Padres.
Pitching Instruction
My current role allows me to plug into conversations about the short-term and long-term development of pitchers at the Major League level. I am offered the opportunity to provide daily cueing to Major League pitchers paired with daily conversations tied to TrackMan, Hawkeye and Kinatrax data. My prior role as a Development Coach meant I was relied on to communicate pitch design concepts and cues to conceptualize pitch movement data and translate advanced scouting information into actionable steps with pitchers and staff. Additionally, I constructed unique videos that blended in various elements to enhance pitchers’ understanding of advanced pitch sequencing, optimal arsenal zones and pitch movement progressions.
Data Analysis and Advanced Scouting
Currently, at the Major League level, I am tasked daily to analyize development goals and pitch movement data for our pitchers. In my prior role as a Minor League Development Coach, I was expected to be the resident analyst of the coaching staff. Each day was spent investigating team and individual trends in pitching, hitting and fielding data. Data translation was a large part of my role having to concisely communicate complex data into coachable points. I also created secondary advanced templates in order to enhance player/staff digestion of key information.
Research and Development
In prior roles I was empowered to initiate and collaborate on research projects that attempted to shine light in rarely explored areas of baseball. Using existing technologies I attempted to manipulate them into alternate applications that could offer unique information and be directly applied to player performance. My prior roles required me to be the resident expert operating, troubleshooting and interpreting Trackman, Hawkeye, Rapsodo Pitching/Hitting/Insight, K-Vest, 4D Motion, Edgertronic, BATS, HitTrax, and other technologies.
Educational Presentations
Using experiences and information gained at the professional level I was able to coordinate and conduct weekly educational presentations at DST to San Antonio area college coaches about the impact of new age analytics and correlations to organizational output. Some of the topics included vertical location effectiveness in relation to fastball vertical break, establishing organizational averages to asses incoming athletes, and using public data to enhance the player learning curve of pitch movement metrics.
Formation of Pitching Curriculum
At DST San Antonio I was responsible for leading daily pitching, instruction, and analysis. My role was to collaborate with others in the pitching department to develop individual programs for optimal athlete growth. I got to work with the strength and hitting departments on daily floor scheduling while working to identify athlete inefficiencies.
